Common Claims Questions

  • What to do after a car accident

After an accident, make sure no one is injured, whether it's the occupants of your car or those in other vehicles, and don't forget about pedestrians or others nearby. Move to a safe place, away from traffic. Regardless of the circumstances of the accident, do not admit fault and do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the insurance company and the police. If there are no police at the scene, call them to report even a small accident (or in a parking lot). Ask the police how to obtain a copy of the accident report. Record details of the accident, including location, time, damage to the vehicle, other vehicles, and other property (tip: use your smartphone camera to take photos of the damage). Get this information from other drivers and other relevant people:
  • What to do after a homeowner Loss

If the loss involves a fire, flood, or other dangerous situation, make sure all family members and pets are safe. If the homeowner's loss involves property damage, take practical steps to prevent further damage. For example, if windows are broken, board them up to prevent further damage from additional costs. When safe to do so, make an inventory of damaged and destroyed personal property. You should file a claim with your insurance company regardless of whether you have any doubts that a minor accident will result in a claim (minor dog bites and slip and fall accidents fall into this category). Failure to report a claim in a timely manner may result in the insurer denying coverage.
